anniversary trip - the berkshires!
When it rains, it pours. Hence the wealth of blog posting today/over the last few weeks. :)
Last weekend, in honor of the seven (7!) years that have passed since wedding #1, Joey and I went to the Berkshires, in western Massachusetts. We stayed at an adorable little bed and breakfast in South Lee, a town that is a hop, skip, and a jump away from the border with upstate New York. After packing the car with bags and bikes on Friday morning, I met Joey at a commuter rail station near his office on Friday afternoon, and we went directly to our weekend getaway. It was lovely. The weather had been quite hot in Boston the days before (Jabari, who was visiting, declared that he'd never experienced anything quite like it). In the mountains, though, it was downright pleasant, with cool breezes and the occasional brief rain shower to mix things up.
On our first evening, we had a late dinner at a local pub, where there were two older guys singing cover songs and joking with the crowd. The next day, Joey took me on a *killer* bike ride, which we later figured out was about 26 miles long (my first marathon), and climbed at least 600 feet at one particular incline. We survived with the help of chocolate chip pancakes at a diner we found halfway through, as well as the usual grit and determination. That night, we went to Tanglewood, the Berkshires' famous outdoor music festival, and saw jazz singer Diana Krall, who was wonderful. On Sunday, we did a little hike to a delightful waterfall, and then braved the traffic to come home. All in all, a wonderful mini-holiday.

tall ships and summer
This weekend - well, this week really - there are a number of fun
things going on around our little part of the world. First of all, from
the 21st of June or thereabouts, New England realized that it should be
summer and has been treating us to temperatures that are appropriate to
that season.
Yesterday, Joey and I went to the beach. It was my first proper New England beach, and I can say the following about it:
1. It was giant. Biggest beach I've ever seen.
2. It was crowded. I think all of Eastern Massachusetts was there, along with some of New Hampshire, which is not too far from where we were.
3. Good heavens it was cold. No New England beach bathing for this lady.

Today there was a reenactment of a battle that happened during the war of 1812, for the 200 year anniversary of that event. So we went down to the Boston seaport to see it, and also toured some of the visiting antique naval ships that are here from around the world. Happily, we did take pictures of that, and you can enjoy them too.
